Winter Clean Up

07 May 2019

Winter is well and truly on its way. A good deal of the country has suffered from drought this year so many of us are currently removing dead and dying plants. Now is a good time to get those new plants planted before the really bad weather hits. It is always well worth while taking time to apply mulch to the garden, especially in those dry areas. Here in the Parva Garden we are cleaning up and cutting back a lot of our perennials. Generally perennials really appreciate being cut back and cleaned up for the winter. In the spring they will burst into growth again ready to shine throughout the summer months. We try not to spray our garden too much but sometimes the plants just need a bit of help to ward off those nasty bugs and fungus that attack them. Greg has had good success this year using good old baking soda on plants such as Hydrangeas, Penstemons & Phlox among others which has made a great difference to powdery mildew.

Taking time to do the ground work at this time of year is well worth the effort and your plants will thank you in the spring by shooting away when the warmer weather is back again.
